Honored as Benjamin Franklin Award Finalist
Folio One Publishing is proud to announce that Seeds of Love: For Brothers and Sisters of International Adoption written by Mary E. Petertyl and illustrated by Jill Chambers has been selected as a finalist in the Parenting category of the 1998 Benjamin Franklin Awards.
The Benjamin Franklin Awards, which recognize books that set the standards and pace for the publishing industry, are sponsored by the Publishers Marketing Association. They celebrate excellence in editorial and design for titles published in 1997 and are awarded each year over BookExpo weekend in Chicago. Judges for the awards come from all areas of the industry: major newspaper and trade media reviewers, bookstore and library buyers and reviewers, non-competing publishers, artists and writers who serve the industry. This year, the judges reviewed a field of 1500 entries.
Seeds of Love, published by Folio One Publishing in 1997, is a lovingly written and beautifully illustrated children's book about a little girl whose parents travel abroad to adopt her baby sister.
"A most unusual story for children, but an excellent one," declared one of two judges that awarded this delightful book with a perfect "10". "Very well done," declared the other.
Seeds of Love has been embraced as a must-read by the international adoption community. "Seeds of Love provides a critical link between parents who must travel abroad to adopt, and their children who must endure this absence," says Dana E. Johnson, M.D., Ph.D. Co-Director of the International Adoption Clinic at the University of Minnesota. "This book is a splendid way to change a scary separation into an eagerly anticipated arrival of a new sibling."
Adoptive Families magazine hails Seeds of Love as, "A gem to be shared." Seeds of Love has also been selected by Parent Council(tm) as "outstanding from a learning perspective," noting that this charming story presents a clever way to help children with the passage of time which could be adapted to other situations.
Seeds of Love was written when author Mary E. Petertyl and her husband Gary were preparing to travel to China to adopt their daughter Anna in 1996. "I worried about how our four-year-old daughter Carly would handle our extended separation," says Mary. "I looked for, but could not find, a book to help ease her anxiety during this important time." As a professional writer and editor, Mary naturally felt compelled to address this void in the children's adoption literature.
